Farm Enterprise Development
The major enterprise being promoted by the CBO is crop and animal production & marketing. Since
inception to date, the CBO has been able to procure and distribute 10,110 crop seedlings and animal
breeds to 450 farmers within the lake basin region. But due to increased demand as a result of new
farmers joining the organization, we are currently adopting the crop propagation technology through
rapid multiplication in order to produce more plantlets that will be issued to farmers at lower cost. So
far through this technology we have produced 1485 plantlets for various crops and plant species that
have been distributed to farmers for planting. This has been made possible through partnership with
Ministry of Agriculture and our International Partners.

Agro forestry and Tree Planting
With support of Cymbidium CBO through procured Agroforestry materials & tree planting campaigns,
since inception Cymbidium farmers has facilitated planting of 200,520 long-term trees both on
agricultural farm land & public facility (degraded land and affiliate schools). We have also established
community tree nurseries with anticipated production capacity of 100,000 tree seedlings yearly. Some
farmer groups have been trained on own seeds collection & utilization to enhance its sustainability. The
organization aims at ensuring 10% tree cover fully implemented by at least 75% of its affiliated members by 2025. The achievement has been occasioned by adoption of Sustainable agriculture based on
Agroforestry practices.

Value Addition
The CBO has trained farmers and groups on micro-production of value added products i.e. chips, crisps,
andazi/chapati & banana jam which are locally sold. These products are produced at small-scale due to
lack of equipment/tools and seed-capital to scale it up.

Financial Services
The CBO has been providing financial training to farmers and so far it has seen 105 farmer groups adopting Village Saving and Loaning Association schemes with 80 farmers actively involved in the project
with a good savings scheme.

SALM Methodology/Practices
SALM is an acronym for Sustainable Agriculture Land Management. The ‘Management’ involves use and
adoption of farming practices aimed at:

  • Improving soil fertility
  • Increase agricultural productivity/yields
  • Reduce carbon emission
  • Increase tree cover

The CBO has facilitated several trainings & adoption of SALM practices among farmers which includes:
Agro forestry farming, Climate change Mitigation & adaptation, Soil & Water conservation, Agronomical
practices, Nutrient Management, Integrated Pest & Livestock management, Renewable energy
,Rehabilitation & restoration of degraded land as well as minimum/reduced tillage & residue waste
management.
